This week’s topic:  What aspects of your parents’ parenting do you want to continue in parenting your own kid(s)?

Parenting sure has changed from when I was a kid.  For example, my pediatrician had my mom start me on solids foods at three weeks old!  Aellyn had nothing but breastmilk until six months.  Some things never change though and my parents did something (many things, actually) that I want to continue on with Aellyn.  They were wonderful at making special days special.

The first day of school each year my dad took off work (or went in late) so he could be there to have breakfast with us.  My mom made a hot breakfast and we ate it on the fine china with the crystal glasses. I have such great memories of those “fancy” breakfasts.  (the image here is my mom’s actual pattern – Blue Danube.)

On the last day of school my dad would beat us home somehow and have School’s Out for Summer by Alice Cooper blasting on the stereo!  That was great fun too.

On Valentine’s Day my dad got us girls flowers and small gifts.  It was so nice to always be someone’s sweetheart.  He still calls me on Valentine’s Day to ask me to be his sweetheart.  No matter how old I get I still feel like my Dad’s special girl.

When my sister and I were baptized and first got our periods we also got flowers from Dad.  And, in case this sounds all like my happy memories are of my Dad – I’ve since found out that it was Mom who was the genius behind these seemingly small gestures.

I want to make sure that I incorporate specialness into Aellyn’s every day.  Everyone celebrates a birthday and other holidays.  Celebrating the ordinary day is the kind of special that lasts a lifetime.

  1. I LOVE the fancy breakfast idea for first days of school. I’m definitely borrowing this idea from your parents. I don’t have fancy china but I’m sure some flowers, table clothes, and fabric napkins will do the trick!

  2. That is a great idea! I love the school’s out song. Too funny!

I had no idea there was a blog hop. I will have to keep it in mind for next week! Or if I get inspired by the end of today… 🙂
