What a great post! my mother also always darned (well, she still does:-) I love the ‘trendy craftiness’ of homemade and home-mended but you are right; it is much less wasteful as well. What a wonderful lesson to pass one to our little blessings!
Wow! I love that triangle diagram, it’s so true! I might have to post that up somewhere to remind myself.
I am always happy to sew up tears in shirts, sew back on buttons, and repair little things that we own to help them last longer. It’s strange but doing little chores like that for some reason makes me feel womanly, in a Laura Ingles Wilder way. (But I won’t be mending any socks, I only own 2 pairs and wear them on dreaded occasions!)
I love the questions you list here – they are things that people rarely think about when making purchases. It would be nice if we could all shop (or accept hand-me-downs) more consciously. Thanks for the great post!!

I am so grateful my mother taught me to sew. I am not nearly as industrious as she was (although I certainly had more time for sewing projects before becoming a mom myself!) Still, mending and sewing back on buttons is a must have skill!
This is so great! I just read this post to my dd- very informative! I love the darning how to. I’m a great sewer- but I actually did not know how to darn socks properly. This is awesome.
You’re so right. When I was super poor, darning my socks was the only option, but the more comfortable I get, the more I throw away rather than take the time, first of all, to buy something of lasting value and, second of all, to restore and maintain what I have. I will have to try this lightbulb trick!
To my husband’s chagrin, I have a tendency to wear socks regardless of whether there’s a hole in them or not. I can’t seem to bring myself to throw out something that’s still pretty wearable just cause it’s got a hole (or two…ok, maybe 3). So, thanks to your sock darning video tutorial, I can at least learn to make my socks look like new again, and have my husband breathe a sigh of relief.
Alright, I just have to say THANK YOU for including that video in your post. Hearing about people darning their socks is one thing (impressive!) but showing us how we can do it ourselves (I think I could do that!) is mightily handy. Even my husband thinks I might be able to do it (hah!)! 😉 And I like the lightbulb idea (especially since I have no idea what a darning egg is or where to get one).

I want felt food for the girls. I thought of trying to make some myself, but I can’t sew. I imagine it may take me a while doing it by hand.
