Misconceptions about IVF

Posted by: Paige on: June 13, 2008

Someone asked me yesterday “did you get to pick the hair and eye color?”  It is like they think IVF is a lifestyle choice.  Who started this crap about “designer babies?”  It is so far from the truth it is amazing.  This seems to be what the average person thinks about assisted reproductive technologies.  Or you hear “did you do that to have twins?”  What???  That’s like asking a cancer patient if they “did that to be bald.”  How do we change public opinion that IVF is treatment for a disease (or diseases) and it is grueling not the latest consumer product?

I don’t think you can change the perception of stupid people. They won’t understand it unless they’ve gone through it.

I had my twins “the natural way” and was constantly asked if I did fertility treatments. When I told one lady that no, we didn’t use any fertility treatment, her comment back was “Are you sure?”.

Gah. People.

WTF? I can’t believe someone actually asked that. I think we are doing something…we are telling our stories (the good and the bad) to hopefully help people who are in the same boat and inform family and friends of the process.

Keep up the great writing!

wow.. some people are just so..wow.. that’s awful.

my sentiments exactly!

People are idiots…I don’t think anyone realizes what IVF is really about until they go through that. That being said, I hope that people don’t have to go through it b/c it’s the hardest thing that we’ve ever done…I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

I was also reading patti’s comment…I have people asking me if “twins run in my family” which is their undercover way of asking me if I’ve had IVF treatments…I caught onto that pretty quick. Again, people are idiots…if I wanted them to know about my life, I’d tell them!

Congrats on your beta…enjoy it!!!
